Formula
Payout = Bet × Payout Ratio (e.g. 35:1 for straight up)
House Edge (American) = 2/38 = 5.26% | European = 1/37 = 2.70%
Example
$10 straight-up bet on European wheel: payout = 10 × 35 = $350. Probability = 1/37 = 2.70%. Expected loss per $10 spin = $0.27.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Straight up: 35:1 | Split: 17:1 | Street: 11:1 | Corner: 8:1 | Six Line: 5:1 | Dozen/Column: 2:1 | Even money (Red/Black/Odd/Even/Hi/Lo): 1:1. Payouts are the same on American and European wheels.
- American roulette (0 and 00): 5.26% on all bets except the 5-number basket (7.89%). European (single 0): 2.70%. French with En Prison rule on even bets: 1.35%. Always choose European or French when available.
- In French roulette, if the ball lands on 0, even-money bets are "imprisoned" for one more spin rather than lost. If the next spin wins, you get your stake back. This halves the house edge on even bets to 1.35%.
- The Martingale (double bet after each loss) cannot overcome the house edge long-term. Table maximums limit how many times you can double, and a streak of 6–10 losses (which occurs regularly) leads to reaching the table limit and losing your entire sequence.
- On a European wheel, all bets have the same 2.70% edge. On French wheels, even-money bets with En Prison have 1.35% — the best available. Avoid American roulette's 5-number basket bet (7.89% edge).
