How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number) readings in mmHg.
- The calculator shows your AHA blood pressure category, risk level, and mean arterial pressure.
- Use the Average tab to average 3 readings for more accuracy.
- Use the Log & Compare tab to compare morning vs evening readings.
- Use the Professional tab for full risk factor assessment and clinical guidance.
Formula
MAP = (Systolic + 2 × Diastolic) / 3
Pulse Pressure = Systolic − Diastolic
AHA 2024: Normal <120/80 | Elevated 120–129/<80 | Stage 1 130–139/80–89 | Stage 2 ≥140/≥90 | Crisis >180/>120
Pulse Pressure = Systolic − Diastolic
AHA 2024: Normal <120/80 | Elevated 120–129/<80 | Stage 1 130–139/80–89 | Stage 2 ≥140/≥90 | Crisis >180/>120
Example
Example: BP = 132/85 mmHg → Stage 1 Hypertension. MAP = (132 + 2×85)/3 = 100.7 mmHg. Pulse Pressure = 132−85 = 47 mmHg.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg. Elevated is 120–129 systolic with diastolic below 80. Stage 1 hypertension is 130–139/80–89, and Stage 2 is 140+ or 90+.
- MAP is the average pressure in arteries during one cardiac cycle. It is calculated as (systolic + 2 × diastolic) / 3. A normal MAP is 70–100 mmHg. Below 60 mmHg is considered dangerously low.
- Pulse pressure is the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Normal is 40–60 mmHg. A consistently high pulse pressure (>60 mmHg) can indicate arterial stiffness.
- You should consult a doctor if readings consistently show Stage 1 hypertension (130/80+) or higher. A hypertensive crisis (>180/120) requires immediate emergency medical care.
