Formula
USD-quoted pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD): Pip Value = Units × 0.0001
USD-base pairs (USD/JPY, USD/CAD): Pip Value = Units × pip size / Exchange Rate
Total P&L = Pip Value × Number of Pips
Example
Example: Buy 1 standard lot (100,000) EUR/USD at 1.0850. 50 pip move up. Pip Value = 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10/pip. Profit = 50 × $10 = $500. Minus 1.5-pip spread = $15 spread cost. Net = $485.
Frequently Asked Questions
- A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price move in a currency pair. For most pairs (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), 1 pip = 0.0001. For JPY pairs (USD/JPY), 1 pip = 0.01 because the JPY is quoted to 2 decimal places.
- For USD-quoted pairs (EUR/USD): Pip Value = Lot Size × Pip Size (0.0001). For USD-base pairs (USD/JPY): Pip Value = Lot Size × Pip Size / Exchange Rate. For a standard lot (100,000) on EUR/USD, each pip = $10.
- Standard lot = 100,000 units ($10/pip for EUR/USD), Mini lot = 10,000 units ($1/pip), Micro lot = 1,000 units ($0.10/pip). Micro lots are ideal for beginners managing risk.
- The spread is the difference between the bid and ask price, measured in pips. It is the broker's primary cost. A 1.5-pip spread on a standard lot of EUR/USD costs $15 per round-trip trade.
- If you hold a position overnight, you pay or receive a swap (rollover) fee based on the interest rate differential between the two currencies. Positions held longer gain or lose additional pips through swap charges.
