Frequently Asked Questions
- 15-20% is standard in the US. 18% is a common default. For excellent service, 20-25%. For takeout, 10-15% is typical.
- Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator uses the total bill amount you enter.
- Rounding up makes each person's share a clean number. "Nearest $1" rounds $21.37 to $22. "Nearest $5" rounds to $25. The extra goes toward a larger tip.
- This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's subtotal separately and add their proportional tip share.
