How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your package weight in pounds.
- Enter package dimensions (length, width, height) in inches.
- Select domestic or international destination.
- See estimated costs for USPS, UPS, and FedEx side by side.
- Use the By Speed tab to compare ground vs. express vs. overnight rates.
- Use the Dimensional Weight tab to check if DIM weight applies to your package.
- Use the Professional tab to add insurance, surcharges, and calculate monthly bulk shipping costs.
Formula
DIM Weight = L × W × H ÷ 139
Billable Weight = max(Actual Weight, DIM Weight)
Total Cost = (Base Rate + Insurance + Surcharges) × (1 + Fuel Surcharge %)
Example
A 2 lb package, 12"×9"×6": DIM Weight = 12×9×6÷139 = 4.67 lbs. DIM weight exceeds actual weight, so you're billed for 4.67 lbs. USPS estimate: $2.89 + 4.67×$0.72 = $6.25.
Frequently Asked Questions
- DIM (Dimensional) weight = Length × Width × Height ÷ 139 (in inches). Carriers charge the higher of actual weight or DIM weight. A large but light box may cost more because of its size.
- These are estimates based on typical base rates. Actual rates vary by exact zip codes, carrier account type, package contents, and current rate tables. Always verify on carrier websites for exact quotes.
- Carriers add a fuel surcharge (typically 10–20%) to cover fluctuating fuel costs. This calculator uses a 15% estimate. The actual surcharge changes weekly based on fuel price indexes.
- DIM weight applies when the calculated dimensional weight exceeds the actual package weight. This commonly affects lightweight items in large boxes, like pillows, foam products, or clothing.
- UPS and FedEx charge extra ($4–5) when delivering to a residential address vs. a commercial address. USPS does not charge this fee, which is why USPS can be cheaper for home deliveries.
