How to Use This Calculator
- Select your bedroom count and furnished level for a quick recommendation.
- Use the By Cubic Feet tab if you have a specific inventory estimate.
- The Professional tab adds fuel and rental cost calculation.
Formula
Studio/1 BR → 10 ft. 1 BR fully furnished → 15 ft. 2 BR → 20 ft. 3+ BR → 26 ft.
Fuel cost = (miles ÷ MPG) × gas price.
Example
3-bedroom home, fully furnished: recommend 26 ft truck (1,611 cu ft). 300-mile move at $3.80/gal: 300÷8 = 37.5 gal × $3.80 = $142.50 fuel.
Frequently Asked Questions
- A 15 ft truck (764 cu ft) is the standard recommendation for a 2-bedroom apartment. If you have bulky furniture like a sectional sofa or king-size bed, size up to a 20 ft truck.
- 10 ft = 402 cu ft, 15 ft = 764 cu ft, 20 ft = 1,015 cu ft, 26 ft = 1,611 cu ft. Rule of thumb: 40 medium boxes take roughly 120 cu ft; a typical sofa takes 60 cu ft.
- Smaller 10-15 ft trucks average 10-12 MPG. Large 20-26 ft trucks average 8-10 MPG. Factor in extra fuel cost on longer moves — a 500-mile move in a 26 ft truck uses about 63 gallons.
- For local moves under 50 miles, DIY truck rental is typically 60-70% cheaper. For moves over 500 miles or full households, professional movers can be competitive when you factor in fuel, hotels, and loading time.
