How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter arrival and departure times at the connecting airport.
  2. Select connection type.
  3. See layover duration and MCT verdict.
  4. Use Professional for terminal-change and baggage buffer analysis.

Formula

Layover = Departure − Arrival (+ 1440 if next day)
Effective Time = Layover − Terminal Buffer − Baggage Buffer

Example

Arrive 10:30, depart 13:00, international, different terminal, bags: 150 min − 20 − 30 = 100 min effective vs 90 min MCT → Sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Minimum Connection Time is the shortest allowed gap between arriving and departing flights. Domestic US: typically 45–60 min; international: 90 min; customs/border: 2+ hours.
  • On a single ticket the airline rebooks you at no cost. On separate tickets you bear the rebooking cost — always pad tight layovers or book a single itinerary.
  • At large airports (LAX, CDG, JFK) a terminal change adds 15–30 minutes and may require re-clearing security — easily fatal to a 60-minute layover.
  • A layover is under 24 hours at the connecting city. A stopover is 24+ hours and often requires hotel accommodation.
