How to Use This Calculator

  1. Find the Wattage of your device on its label or in the manual.
  2. Enter how many Hours per Day you use it.
  3. Enter your Electricity Rate from your utility bill ($/kWh).
  4. The calculator shows daily, monthly, and annual running costs.

Formula

kWh per Day = (Wattage / 1000) × Hours per Day

Daily Cost = kWh per Day × Price per kWh

Monthly Cost = Daily Cost × 30

Example

A 100W light bulb used 5 hours/day at $0.13/kWh.

  • kWh/day = (100/1000) × 5 = 0.5 kWh
  • Daily Cost = 0.5 × $0.13 = $0.065
  • Monthly Cost = $0.065 × 30 = $1.95

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Energy (kWh) = Wattage / 1000 × Hours Used. Cost = Energy (kWh) × Price per kWh. For example, a 100W bulb running 5 hours uses 0.5 kWh, costing $0.065 at $0.13/kWh.
  • Check your utility bill for the rate in cents per kWh. The US national average is around $0.12–$0.16/kWh, but it varies significantly by state and provider.
  • A typical 55-inch LED TV uses about 100W. Running 8 hours/day at $0.13/kWh costs about $0.10/day or $3.12/month.
  • Heating and cooling (HVAC) typically account for 40–50% of home electricity use. Water heaters, washers/dryers, and refrigerators are the next biggest consumers.
