How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the room length and width in feet.
  2. Enter the tile width and height in inches.
  3. Enter the grout joint width in inches and a waste percentage.
  4. Results show tiles needed and total area.

Formula

Tile area (ft²) = (tile_W_in + grout_in) × (tile_H_in + grout_in) ÷ 144

Tiles = ceil(Room area ÷ Tile area × (1 + waste%))

Example

Example: 10×12 ft room, 12×12 in tile, 0.125 in grout, 10% waste → 133 tiles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Divide the room area by the tile area. Add a waste percentage (typically 10%) for cuts and breakage.
  • Use 10% for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal layouts, and 15–20% for complex patterns or irregular rooms.
  • Larger grout joints mean slightly fewer tiles fit per row. The calculator adds the grout width to each tile dimension before computing coverage.
  • Enter the actual tile face dimensions in inches (e.g., 12×12 for a 12-inch tile). The grout joint is added on top of that.
  • Yes — the result is always rounded up to the next whole tile to ensure you have enough for the cut pieces.
