How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the length and width of your area in feet.
- Enter the desired depth in inches.
- Results show cubic feet, cubic yards, estimated bags, and weight.
Formula
Cubic feet = Length × Width × (Depth ÷ 12)
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
Bags (1 cu ft) = ceil(Cubic feet × 1.05)
Weight = Cubic feet × 75 lbs
Example
Example: 8 ft × 4 ft raised bed, 12 in deep → 32 cu ft → 1.19 cu yd → 34 bags → 2,400 lbs.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Multiply length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) and divide by 27. This calculator does that automatically and also gives you the equivalent in bags.
- Topsoil weighs about 2,000–2,700 lbs per cubic yard. Garden mix is lighter at about 1,500–1,800 lbs. Use the 75 lbs/cu ft default or select your soil type for accuracy.
- One cubic yard = 27 cubic feet. A 1 cu ft bag fills 1 cubic foot. A typical 40 lb bag covers about 0.5 cu ft, so about 54 bags per cubic yard.
- Most vegetables need 12 inches (1 foot) of soil. Root vegetables like carrots need 18–24 inches. For flower beds, 6–8 inches is usually sufficient.
- Topsoil is native soil used for filling and grading. Garden mix contains compost, perlite, and amendments for better drainage and plant growth. Use garden mix for raised beds.
