How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the house perimeter in linear feet (or use the Detailed tab to enter each roof edge).
  2. Select the number of stories to estimate downspout lengths.
  3. Use the Cost Estimate tab to select material and get a price range.
  4. Use the Professional tab to get hangers, sealant tubes, gutter guard cost, and labor hours.

Formula

Gutter lf = sum of all eave edges • Downspouts = lf ÷ spacing (default 30 ft) • Hangers = lf ÷ 2 ft

Example

150 lf perimeter house: 5 downspouts (150÷30), ~300 hangers, ~3 sealant tubes. At $5/lf aluminum: $750 material cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You need gutter on every eave edge that drains water. For a simple rectangular house, that is typically two long edges. Measure those edges and add all gutter runs together for total linear feet.
  • Install one downspout for every 20–40 linear feet of gutter. This calculator uses 1 per 30 ft as a default. More downspouts prevent overflow during heavy rain.
  • 5-inch K-style gutters handle most residential roofs. For steeper or larger roofs, or in high-rainfall areas, upgrade to 6-inch. Half-round gutters are common on older/historic homes.
  • Gutter guards reduce debris buildup and clogging. They add $2–10 per linear foot but can cut maintenance to once a year or less.
  • Aluminum and vinyl gutters last 20 years. Steel lasts 15–20 years. Copper gutters can last 50+ years with minimal maintenance.
