How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your floor length and width in feet.
  2. Results show primer, base coat, and top coat gallons instantly.
  3. Use the Decorative tab to add metallic/flake quantities.
  4. Use the Cost Estimate tab to input your product prices per gallon.
  5. Switch to Professional for acid etch, self-leveling compound, anti-slip additive, and full project cost.

Formula

Primer gallons = Area ÷ 250 • Base coat = Area ÷ coverage rate × coats • Top coat = Area ÷ 300

Flake (lbs) = Area × broadcast rate (oz/sq ft) ÷ 16

Example

20 × 20 ft garage (400 sq ft): Primer = 1.6 gal, Base coat = 2.0 gal (2 coats at 200 sq ft/gal each), Top coat = 1.3 gal. At $45/$65/$75 per gallon: material cost ≈ $290.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A typical 2-car garage (20 × 20 ft = 400 sq ft) needs about 1.6 gallons of primer (at 250 sq ft/gal), 2 gallons of base coat (at 200 sq ft/gal), and 1.3 gallons of top coat (at 300 sq ft/gal).
  • Yes — for most bare concrete floors, acid etching (or mechanical grinding) opens the pores so epoxy adheres properly. Use approximately 0.5 gallons of etching solution per 100 sq ft.
  • Most residential floors need 2 coats of base coat plus a clear top coat. High-traffic commercial floors benefit from 3 base coats.
  • Coverage varies by product viscosity. Typical ranges: primer 250–300 sq ft/gal, base coat 150–250 sq ft/gal, clear top coat 250–350 sq ft/gal. Always check your product label.
  • Most water-based epoxies require 12–24 hours between coats at 70°F. Solvent-based products may need 24–48 hours. Temperature and humidity affect dry time significantly.
