How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your driveway length and width in feet.
- Set coverage rate (default 80 sq ft/gal for 1-coat, 40 sq ft/gal for 2-coat).
- Results show gallons with 5% waste and 5-gallon pails. Use Extended tabs for 1-coat vs 2-coat comparison or crack filler add-on.
Formula
Area = Length × Width
Gallons = (Area ÷ Coverage) × 1.05
Pails = CEILING(Gallons ÷ 5)
Example
Example: 40 ft × 16 ft driveway, 1-coat at 80 sq ft/gal → 640 sq ft ÷ 80 × 1.05 = 8.4 gallons → 2 pails of 5-gallon sealer.
Frequently Asked Questions
- One gallon of asphalt driveway sealer covers approximately 80 sq ft for a single coat. For two coats, estimate 40 sq ft per gallon total.
- Seal a new asphalt driveway after 6–12 months, then recoat every 3–5 years. Over-sealing can cause buildup and peeling, so avoid sealing every year.
- Apply driveway sealer when surface temperature is between 50°F and 90°F. Avoid application if rain is expected within 24 hours or if temperatures will drop below 50°F overnight.
- Yes, coal tar sealer is banned in several states and municipalities including Minnesota, Washington state, and Washington DC due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) runoff. Check local regulations before purchasing.
- Fill cracks wider than 1/4 inch with rubberized asphalt crack filler before sealing. One tube of crack filler covers about 30 linear feet of crack.
