How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the counter length in feet and depth (default 2.08 ft = 25 in).
  2. Enter the number of sink cutouts to deduct (~4 sq ft each).
  3. Use Extended tabs for islands and L/U-shape kitchens. Switch to Professional for material cost estimates.

Formula

Gross Area = Length × Depth

Net Area = Gross Area − (Sinks × 4 sq ft)

Backsplash = Length × (Height_in ÷ 12)

Example

Example: 10 ft counter, 25 in deep, 1 sink → 10 × 2.08 = 20.8 sq ft − 4 = 16.8 sq ft net. At $85/sq ft quartz = $1,428 material cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Multiply the counter length by the depth (typically 25 inches = 2.08 ft for standard counters). Subtract about 4 sq ft per sink cutout.
  • Standard kitchen countertops are 25 inches deep (including a 1-inch overhang over 24-inch base cabinets). Island countertops are often 36–48 inches wide.
  • Granite countertops typically cost $40–$100 per square foot installed. Quartz runs $50–$120/sq ft. Laminate is the most affordable at $20–$50/sq ft.
  • Not always — backsplash is often a separate material. However, a 4-inch matching stone backsplash is typically fabricated from the same slab. The calculator shows backsplash area separately.
  • For runs longer than 8–10 feet, stone countertops require seams where two slabs meet. Seam placement should be agreed on with the fabricator before templating.
