How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the room length and width in feet.
  2. Select your carpet roll width (12 ft or 15 ft).
  3. Results show square feet, square yards, and number of roll pieces needed.

Formula

Area (sq ft) = Length × Width

sq yd = sq ft ÷ 9 | Roll pieces = ceil(Room width ÷ Roll width)

Add 10% waste for cuts and seams

Example

Example: 15 ft × 20 ft room → 300 sq ft → 33.3 sq yd (+ 10% = 37 sq yd). 2 pieces from a 12-ft roll.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Measure your room length × width in feet to get square footage, then divide by 9 to get square yards. Add 10% for waste and cuts.
  • Carpet has traditionally been sold in square yards in the US. Divide your square footage by 9 to convert to square yards.
  • Standard carpet rolls are 12 feet wide. Some premium carpets come in 15-foot widths. This affects seam placement in your room.
  • Measure the tread depth + riser height for each step (typically 17–18 inches total), multiply by stair width, then multiply by number of stairs.
  • Yes — padding is sold separately and typically matches the square footage of the carpet area. Add 10% for waste on padding too.
